Why This Organic Breakfast Ingredient Is a Must

Organic Breakfast Item

As consumers, we often take the safety and quality of our food for granted. We assume the foods we purchase are safe for us and our families. So it may come as a shock to many that oatmeal, oat cereals, and granola commonly found in grocery stores contain unsafe levels of potentially carcinogenic chemicals.

It’s unsettling, isn’t it? You’d think that couldn’t be possible. And yet, in 2018, the Environmental Working Group (an American non-profit organization that specializes in research and advocacy in the areas of agricultural subsidies, toxic chemicals, drinking water pollutants and corporate accountability) reported that “an herbicide linked to cancer…was found in all but two of 45 samples of products made with conventionally grown oats.” Even worse, three fourths of these had levels which were considered unsafe for children’s health.

The herbicide the EWG found alarming amounts of in many popular brands of oats is called glyphosate. So what exactly is glyphosate, why is it dangerous, and how can you avoid it?

Oatmeal With a Side of Weed Killer

Glyphosate is a main ingredient in the leading herbicides and pesticides used in the United States. The Environmental Working Group states that no more than .01 mg per day should be consumed; anything more can increase your risk for cancer. Thousands of lawsuits have been filed against companies who use these weed killers after those exposed to it developed cancer.

Of course, we don’t want these kind of harmful toxins in our food. So what can we do to ensure that what we eat is safe?

Eat Clean with Mighty Cricket

It has been suggested that the highest levels of glyphosate in our diets come from wheats and oats. Luckily, there is a simple way to eliminate this chemical from your diet!  You can instead choose foods that use organic oats, which are not treated with most synthetic herbicides and pesticides.

But how can you find organic oats when the most popular brands don’t have them? Mighty Cricket has you covered! We always use 100% organic oats in our products, so you can feel confident that you’re eating safe with us.

Using 100% organic oats is just one #smallbutmighty way we are making a difference in the quality of your food.
